Dr. Katalin Szabo
My Background
Professional Profile
I am a licensed psychologist in the State of California with over a decade of experience as a psychotherapist, having worked in both the Bay Area and my home country of Hungary. I obtained my doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in San Francisco, and I also hold a Master's Degree in counseling psychology from Hungary.

In addition to my private practice, I am currently managing the eating disorders program at Kaiser Redwood City, where I specialize in the treatment of adults and adolescents grappling with severe eating disorders, including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and ARFID.

I successfully completed both my pre- and post-doctoral internships at the Community Institute for Psychotherapy (CIP) located in Marin. Before my tenure at CIP, I gained valuable experience at the Mission Mental Health Clinic within the San Francisco Department of Public Health. There, I had the privilege of providing comprehensive care to the culturally diverse population of San Francisco, offering support to individuals grappling with LGBTQ+ issues, racial identity, immigration challenges, complex trauma, and substance abuse concerns.
Additionally, I honed my interviewing and diagnostic capabilities during my time as a clinical researcher, where I contributed to several PTSD studies conducted by the San Francisco VA. In this role, I conducted clinical assessments with veterans facing a spectrum of PTSD symptoms, representing diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
My professional journey also encompassed roles at various community mental health clinics in both the Bay Area and Hungary. Within outpatient settings, I dedicated myself to the treatment of clients presenting a wide range of mental health concerns, spanning from transient adjustment difficulties to enduring chronic mental disorders.

My approach is firmly rooted in psychodynamic principles, with a particular focus on object relations and interpersonal development. Being a first-generation immigrant myself, I have personally encountered the complexities and rewards of assimilating into a new culture while preserving a meaningful connection to my Eastern European heritage. Drawing from this lived experience, I am deeply committed to assisting my immigrant clients in navigating the emotional aspects of their immigration journey, facilitating their acculturation process, and aiding them in discovering their authentic identity.
